For the longest time, the pen tool in Photoshop has been this elusive creature to me. Recently, I decided to really sit down and try and tackle how to use it , and I must say that I feel I’ve succeeded. I’m not saying that I’m an expert at using the tool just yet, but I will say that my grasp is firm enough to start harnessing some of its vast potential. As my first project, I decided I’d draw a simple figure, and being that it’s Halloween, what could be better than a ghost?

I think it turned out fairly well. I love how smooth I was able to draw curves through the aid of the pen tool. Next, I decided to tackle something a little more challenging so I proceeded to draw a cartoon of myself. Since I wanted it to look something like me, I thought I’d start out by tracing a picture of myself and turning the result into a cartoon. Here is what I got…

Yeah, I know that the cartoon doesn’t have a face, but my initial attempts at facial features were pretty terrible, and as such, I’ll need to work on drawing facial features before my little cartoon is truly ready for prime time. I thought it was a good first start, nonetheless, and it gives me hope of one day creating cartoons like Dave over a Blogography.

GAH! You are already better at it than I am!!
My DaveToons are kind of embarrassing actually… not really something you want to aspire to! I just use them because sometimes I don’t have words to describe what I am trying to say. Though, I am sure the cartoons aren’t much of a help!
Haha, I love your toons! They usually add a lot to what it is you’re trying to convey, and they’re just plain fun and funny!
